J.C. Crosby

UTPA BroncBusters - J.C. Crosby

May 6, 2005

1. You qualified for NCAA Regional Championship in your last season, what are your thoughts in preparation for the meet?
JC - "I am definitely excited about going to regionals. I qualified in the hammer throw, and I'm also trying to qualify in the shot put, which is my specialty."

2. You and Isaac Ybarra are two of the best throwers to come out of the program - how much does it help you to have him training with you?
JC - "It's funny because we were such competitors in high school. Now it's great because we train with each other and are constantly pushing one another. I used to be able to beat him in high school, but he has really dedicated himself and has truly done an unbelievable job here. I know that he can throw further than me in the hammer, but we are right about the same distance in the shot put."

3. If you have to grade yourself on your performance during the season - how would you do it and why?
JC - "In the hammer throw, I would grade myself with a `B' because I've definitely made improvements in that event since it's still relatively new to me. I would have to say a `C' in the shot put because I keep getting my best throws scratched."

4. Is there a difference in training and competing in one event compared to multiple events?
JC - "There is definitely a big difference in the training because there is more pure strength in the shot put and more technique in the hammer throw. In the hammer, it's a lot of lower body that goes into it while the shot put is more upper body."

5. How would you describe your growth as a thrower under head coach Ricky Vaughn?
JC - "I think that this entire program has improved since Coach Vaughn has come along. Everybody who has trained under him has improved, and I don't think that Isaac, Amy (Moses) or myself would be doing as well as we are if he wasn't our coach."

6. What's the one thing that the everyday person wouldn't understand about life as a collegiate thrower?
JC - "The one thing is the amount of work that goes into being a good thrower. A lot of people think that it's just pure strength, but there is so much technique that goes into it."

7. How did you first get involved in competing in the throwing events?
JC - "My dad is a high school coach, and he taught me to start throwing the shot put when I was about eight years old. I would go with him to practice after I was done with school, and he would always have me doing some sort of throwing drill. Eventually, I started going to summer camps in order to help me further in this sport."

8. Discuss the bond that you have formed with your fellow senior teammates, and how all of you will eventually leave this program with a mark in the record books?
JC - "There is a strong bond between Isaac (Ybarra), Marlin (Manley), Jeff (Martzall) and myself. We all came in around the same time, and it's hard to believe how quick these years have passed us. We've always tried to help each other out, and I know in the future that we will continue to talk."

9. What were your goals coming into the 2005 season?
JC - "My first goal was to qualify for the regional meet in the shot put. I've hit that qualifying mark during the season, but every time I've done it, my throw would be scratched because I would go out of the throwing circle. My dad threw shot put in college, and the regional mark is just about the same as his best throw. I want to hit that mark so that he won't be able to hold that over my head that he threw further than me."

10. Who has had the greatest impact on your life and why?
JC - "I would definitely say my dad. He taught me long ago that you don't have to be great to start something, but you have to start something to be great. I always remember that."

1. What was the first car you drove after getting your license?
JC - 1991 Taylor Pick-up... I still have that truck, and it's taken me wherever I've need to go.
