UTPA BroncBusters - Hector Gandara

Oct. 11, 2004

1. After competing at Pratt Community College, what made you decide to transfer to UTPA?
(HG) - Well, I decided to come to UTPA because I missed the Mexican food too much, and I would have a chance to train with Westly Keating and Hugo Cervantes.

2. Did you expect to be running as successful as you have been during the first two meets of the season?
(HG) - Actually, I had greater expectations because my times haven't been nearly as fast as they were two years ago, but I guess as we continue to do speed work, it will make a difference.

3. What was your reaction after winning the first race of the season at Texas State in your Bronc debut?
(HG) - I was actually expecting to win because of how hard I had been training, and I was familiar with the competition.

4. What are the thoughts that run through your head before, during and after a race?
(HG) - When I race I try to stay relax and stay in sight of the leaders. After the race, I see what went wrong or right or what I could have done better and might need to work on.

5. What inspired you to take up cross country?
(HG) - I have always loved running cross country, and I started off with people telling me that I couldn't run.

6. Who has had the greatest impact on your life and why?
(HG) - I would have to say my brother because he taught me to be so competitive. Even though he was eight years older than I was, he never took easy on me whether we were running, playing basketball, etc.

7. Is cross country more mental or physical and why?
(HG) - It takes both because you need to have the mentality of not being afraid of racing, and you need to have the physical strength to go up hills and last the entire race.

8. Is cross country an individual sport or a team sport and why?
(HG) - Well, it's a little of both. You compete with a team, but the efforts are done by yourself.

9. What's the biggest challenge that you've had to overcome?
(HG) - One of the biggest challenges is injuries because you really can't do anything about them, except to be patient.

10. What were your goals coming into the 2004 season, and right now are you on track to attaining them?
(HG) - My goal for the 2004 season is making it to the national meet. I haven't ran as fast as I know I can because my training is intense, but if I run smart and have a good day at the regional meet then my goal could become realistic.

1. What was the first car that you drove after getting your license?
(HG) - My first car I ever drove was a 1988 Ford Taures, and it still sits in my backyard.

2. What was the first concert you ever attended?
(HG) - I've never been to a concert

3. What was the first job that you've ever had?
(HG) - My first job was working out in the fields of Lubbock, TX, and I never intend on going back.

4. What is the first thing you pack before going on a road trip?
(HG) - My going out shirts is usually what I pack first.

5. What is the first thought that runs through your head in the morning?
(HG) - I don't want to go to practice and calling in sick would be much easier.

6. What is the last movie that you watched?
(HG) - I saw the new Exorcist movie.

7. What is the last CD that you bought?
(HG) - I haven't bought one in a while. I usually burn them off my friend's CD.
