UTPA BroncBusters - Nikki Boychuk

May 3, 2005

1. With one more golf tournament left in the season, what are you expectations for the upcoming National Minority Golf Championships?
NB - "Since we broke our goal of shooting under 300 earlier in the season, the main focus has been to shoot under 295. We haven't done that yet, and I think that we have a shot to do it at the National Minority Golf Championships where we are playing a course that we all know. If we achieve our goals then that should care of everything else."

2. You have finished second and fourth at the National Minority Golf Championships in your first two seasons. How have you handled being so close to winning your first collegiate golf tournament only to come up short?
NB - "I guess last year I was not used to leading on the scoreboard heading into the final round. I think that Stefanie (Maynard) was two shot behind me, and I didn't play awful, but I wasn't able to keep the lead. There is a lot less pressure that comes from not leading so when I was actually at the top, it was something that I wasn't familiar with."

3. If you have to grade yourself on your performance during the season - how would you do it and why?
NB - "I thought that I played pretty well in the fall, but I started a little slow in the spring. My striking hasn't been where I would want it, and that's the strength of my game. I would say that my short game is my weakness, but I've had to use it a lot more because of my striking. I've been making the course harder than it should have been."

4. In your third season as a Lady Broncs, how you have seen your game grow since your freshman season?
NB - "My freshman year I was very emotional on the course. If I hit a bad shot then I would completely shutdown, not talk to anyone and get extremely angry. It's hard not to have a bad shot when you are playing 36 holes a day, but that one bad shot would take me out of my game. Now, I'm not as emotional and have been able to stay a lot calmer on the course and have more fun."

5. The team has finished in the top five in six tournaments in the fall and spring, including winning the Ellingson/SHSU Invitational and UTPA Bronc Classic. What's been the key for the team and its success this season?
NB - "I think one thing is that we have limited our number of bad rounds. One player can have a bad round, but you can't have two or three bad rounds because that will really hurt you. We have been able to lower our score on the bad rounds, which has helped us."

6. What's the one thing that the everyday person wouldn't understand about life as a collegiate golfer?
NB - "I guess the easy answer would be the amount of time that I takes up. Playing golf is very emotionally draining because we walk and play 36 holes a day, and it takes a lot out of you. You are spending sometimes 10 hours on the course and that doesn't happen in any other sport."

7. Do you believe that golf is an individual sport or a team sport?
NB - "I really believe that golf is a team sport, and I'm a complete team player. I have a very competitive background, and I never want to let my team down. In college, it's all about being a team because your scores determine where you finish in a tournament. After college, it's completely an individual game."

8. In your eyes, what do you believe is your role on this year's team?
NB - "I guess my role is to be a leader and a follower. When Crystal (Frazier) was redshirted a year ago, I stepped in as captain. With her coming back this season, I have stepped back and allowed her to be our leader. My job is to play as well as I can and not let the team down."

9. What were your goals coming into the 2005 season, and are you on-pace to attaining them?
NB - "My goal coming into the season was to average around a 76 in the fall. I shot a little higher than that in the fall season, and mathematically I won't be about to achieve that in the spring. However, I want to finish up the season on a strong note and really focus on my short game. My mindset is to not to measure my game with numbers and just try to put together strong rounds"

10. Who has had the greatest impact on your life and why?
NB - "There are a lot of people who have impacted my life. Obviously, my parents have been incredible influences on me, and each one has brought something different to the table, which has allowed me to grow. My youth pastor really has been a strong mentor for me, and was a source of strength for me in some tough times."

NB - My uniform

5. What was the first thought when you met Coach Odale?

10. What was the last class that you took at UTPA because you couldn't avoid it anymore?
NB - I really haven't avoided any classes, but I took Communication Research, which was a senior level course as a sophomore.

1. Reality MTV Show - Real World, Road Rules or Read World / Road Rules Challenge?

2. Way to Predict the Future - Palm Reading, Crystal Ball or Tarot Cards?
NB - None... I don't believe in any of them.

3. Old School Music Group - Boyz II Men, New Kids on the Block or Another Bad Creation?

4. Board Game - Candy Land, Sorry or Mouse Trap?
NB - Sorry

5. ABC TGIF Show - Full House, Family Matters or Perfect Strangers?
NB - Full House... I've seen every episode.

6. Simpson Singers - Jessica Simpson or Ashlee Simpson?
NB - Jessica... Ashlee is the lesser of the two.

7. Spring Break Hangout - South Padre Island, Cancun, Mexico or Daytona, FL?
NB - Not South Padre... so I would say Daytona, FL, even though I've never been there.

8. Golf Grand Slam - Master's, British Open, PGA Championships or U.S. Open?
NB - Master's

9. Trash Magazines - National Enquirer or Star?
NB - I don't read either one, but I think that they are equally as bad.

10. More Popular Golfer Player Off the Course - Anika Sorenstam or Natalie Gulbis?
NB - Annika... she is classic.

1. The best moment of my sport's career?
NB - I would say last year when I shot under par at Cimarron because it was my first time. I ended up making an eagle on the last hole, which was a par-5.

2. The worst advice that I ever received from somebody?
NB - Probably when I ran out of balls on the course. It was really embarrassing.

3. The best concert I've ever attended?
NB - George Strait

4. The worst concert I've ever attended?
NB - I would say that it was the worst concert, but Michael Montgomery wasn't as good as I thought he would be.

5. The best road trip that I've taken as a Lady Bronc?
NB - The Virgin Islands... definitely.

6. The worst road trip that I've taken as a Lady Bronc?
NB - Notre Dame... because it was cold and rainy, and we had to withdraw as a team because we were going to miss our flight.

7. The best golf course that I ever played?
NB - There are two of them... the course that we plan on at the National Minority Golf Championships and Tapatio Springs.

8. The worst golf course that I ever played?
NB - Bandit... I lost all of my balls and had to finish my round with a ball that I found in the hazard.

9. The best class that I've taken at UTPA?
NB - Creative Strategies and Media Planning

10. The worst class that I've taken at UTPA?
NB - Communication Research
