1. You run individual as well as part of a relay team, what's the biggest difference in the training between them, and which do you prefer and why?
JM - "I get more nervous about the relay because I don't want to let the other girls down. I really like both of them because in the relay, I feel more relaxed when I am actually running. Individually, I like the 800 meters because it's all up to me, and I am the one that does good or bad."
2. What is your outlook this season for your team and yourself?
JM - "I think the team should do really well. We have some really young girls who are hard workers. Personally, I have no choice, but to do well and want to do well because this is my final year to compete."
3. You have been a part of some of the top relay teams here at UTPA, what goes into making a great relay team?
JM - "I think that everybody strives to do better for each other. We have a goal in mind of a certain time, and we strive to achieve it. If the team likes each other then it makes it better because we always want to do better for each other."
4. You had a successful junior college career (i.e. three-time All-American), how has the coaching staff here at UTPA helped develop you more as an athlete?
JM - "It's a different way of coaching and different type of training. I've had two coaches in two years so one year is not nearly enough time to know about a coach's technique."
5. How has the transition in training and coaching been from Doug Molnar (former assistant coach) to Peter Hess (current assistant coach)?
JM - "It's been a big transition because they have different coaching techniques. I trust what Coach Hess says, and we'll see how his coaching helps me."
6. How do you mentally prepare for an event, and is there a different way to prepare for multiple events?
JM - "I think that the mindset is the same. If you are running multiple events and you're constantly thinking about the next event then you are only making it harder for yourself to focus. I try to take one event at a time and focus on that event."
7. What is the one thing that goes into track and field that the everyday, regular person wouldn't understand?
JM - "No one knows how much work, dedication and pain goes into training other than us. Unless you are an athlete, you will never know what it feels like to run the perfect race or have a great training session."
8. In your eyes, how much of track and field is a team sport and how much is it individual?
JM - "I think that it's more individual because if you're doing well then you're helping the team."
9. What attracted you the most about the UTPA track and field program?
JM - "The scholarship and warm weather."
10. Who has had the greatest impact on your life and why?
JM - "I would say my parents first because they are two of the hardest working people that I have ever met. Seeing how my dad gets up early in the morning for work and how hard he works really motivates me. Also - I would say my high school coach, who was also my club coach, because he was the one that got me involved in track in the first place. He was the reason that I dedicated myself to the sport, and he was also extremely involved in helping me in school."
